Americans tend to underestimate much where Africa is concerned. We also overestimate many of the negative difficulties experienced in Africa. It has not been called the Dark Continent for nothing. There are such a diversity of cultures, languages, religions, and mutual suspicions that few North Americans come to more than superficial understandings.

This map of Africa gives us at least an understanding of the shear size of this continent.  It is a start. Clicking on the map enlarges it, and a second clip enlarges further if you wish to read the map text.
